Moscow Theatre “School of Modern Drama” in Kolkata
The Moscow theatre “School of Modern Drama” (SMD) jointly with the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts (GITIS) took part in the 7th International Theatre Festival in Kolkata. The organizational support was rendered by the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Kolkata.<br />

On May 30, 2018 the Russian theatre showed the play “Freud” – joint project of the SMD and the GITIS based on Austrian psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud’s "The Interpretation of Dreams" as well as fragments from the works of French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre. Young artists – students of the GITIS Olga Grudyaeva, Uliana Bekauri, Iana Zinoveva, Maria Raevskayia, Alina Kushim, Natalia Savotina, Dmitrii Kargin, Dmitrii Tsukanov as well as director Alexander Tsoi were engaged in the production.<br />

The representatives of local intellectual, political and artistic circles, diplomats from the Consular Corps of Kolkata attended the performance, which has drawn a full house and was widely covered by local media. The matinee aroused a storm of applause and enthusiastic reaction of the audience.<br />

According to the dean of the directing faculty of the GITIS Vladimir Baicher, despite a language barrier he has never seen such attentive and grateful spectators as in Kolkata.<br />

The Festival was organized by the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR) and the theatre group “Kalindi Bratyajon” headed by Bratya Basu, eminent Bengali theatre personality, writer, producer, the Minister of Information Technology and Electronics, Government of West Bengal. Besides the Russian company theatres from Italy, Egypt and many Indian cities took part in the Festival. All productions were shown on the stage of the Academy of Fine Arts, one of the oldest auditoriums in the city.
